This website introduces all key facts concerning the presentation of “Germany – Contributing to a Sustainable Urban Future” during World Urban Forum 5 in Rio de Janeiro. Germany will showcase experiences and best practices at the German Pavilion in the WUF 5 exhibition hall.
Today, over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. It is estimated that in the next 50 years, two-thirds of humankind will be living urban. One billion people live in informal settlements and slums, without clean water, sanitation and waste disposal. They are lacking health care, education and regular income. Urban poverty, inequality and the social divide remain huge chanllenges for the rapidly growing cities and megacities all around the world.
- How can cities ensure citizens’ rights, especially those of the urban poor?
- How can inclusive and sustainable urbanisation be achieved?
- How can citizens be actively involved in building inclusive cities?
The search for intelligent solutions to these challenges is the focus of World Urban Forum 5. The theme of this year’s event is: “The Right to the City: Bridging the Urban Divide”. The Forum features an exhibition which Germany is also participating in.
Under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and its implementing organisations German Development Service (DED), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), InWEnt (Capacity Building International) and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Germany is presenting successful strategies, side-events and sound practices of its work in the area of sustainable urban development. Further partners include the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with its associated partner Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres as well as the City of Stuttgart, the City of Regensburg, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the German Federal Environment Agency, the HafenCity University Hamburg and the Technische Universität Darmstadt.
The German pavilion is a meeting point for German experts as well as for international participants of the Forum. You will find the German presentation at Stand No. E91, E92, E99 and E100. The presentation is taking place under the motto: “Germany: Contributing to a Sustainable Urban Future”. It illustrates that Germany is contributing worldwide to sustainable urban development, especially within the context of international cooperation.
